Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
